National Blind Football Series set to return to the Hangar on July 24

The National Blind Football Series is set to return on Sunday 24 July, when South Melbourne FC will once again welcome Brisbane-based Olympic FC to the Hangar, home of the Essendon Football Club in Tullamarine.

The day will kick off at 9:30AM with a Kids Come & Try Session. We encourage all children who live vision impairment or blindness to come down and have a kick, in what will be a fun and welcoming environment for all.

From 10:30AM, the women's blind teams will go head to head in an exhibition match, followed by the rematch of the National Blind Football Series between South Melbourne FC and Olympic FC at 11:00AM.

The clash between the two sides will result in the first ever National Blind Series Champion being crowned. The teams last faced off on May 22 in what was a historic moment for blind football in Australia, as for the first time two interstate teams played off in a competitive setting.

South Melbourne FC took the spoils on that occasion, as a brace from Brendan Spencer proved the difference in a highly entertaining fixture.

The upcoming event will be open to the public so we encourage everyone in our community to head to the Hangar on July 24 to show your support.

About Blind football

  • Blind Football (B1) is an internationally recognised sport played at the Paralympics.
  • It is played outdoors by blind and partially vision impaired athletes on a 40m x 20m pitch with side kickboards and a ball which has bells in it.
  • There are two teams of five; four outfield players and a goalkeeper. The outfield players wear eye-shades to equal their sight and the goalkeeper can be fully or partially sighted.
  • Each team has one goal guide who stands behind the goal, to verbally give instructions to score towards the goal.
