Football Victoria would like to congratulate the following Victorians who have been selected in the Young Matildas squad, coached by Leah Blaney, for the upcoming AFC U-19 Women’s Championship, which will be held in Chonburi, Thailand from the 27th of October to the 9th of November 2019.
The top two teams from each of the two groups in Chonburi will advance to the semi-finals of the competition, with the top three sides at the tournament earning one of Asia’s qualification slots at the 2020 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.
Football Victoria would like to commend Victorian NTC player, Claudia Mihocic, for her selection into the U20 Young Matildas Squad at the age of 16, after a brilliant performance at the AFC U-16 Women’s Championship with the Junior Matildas last month. Congratulations also to Teresa Morrissey, Kyra Cooney-Cross and Chelsea Blissett who came through the Victorian NTC and/or NPLW pathway.
After another brief camp in Sydney (17-21 October) the Westfield Young Matildas will travel to Chonburi on the 21 October. Following a week acclimatising in the heat and humidity in Thailand, Australia will commence match play on 27 October.
Blayney said she had a lot of faith in the selected squad ahead of the tournament.
“We believe that with the squad we have going to this tournament we are a strong chance of earning Australia qualification for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup for the first time since 2006”
Australia will first play their Group A games against DPR Korea, Thailand and Vietnam; match details listed below.
