Bentleigh Greens and Calder United crowned in a thrilling weekend of Cup football

The Dockerty Cup and Nike F.C. Cup Finals headlined a thrilling weekend of football, with two familiar champions being crowned.

The action all started on Saturday when Oakleigh Cannons and Bentleigh Greens met in a fiercely contested match at Lakeside Stadium.

The deadlock was broken early in the second half when Joe Guest swept home at the back post to cap off a period of dominance for the Cannons. As the game wore on, Bentleigh worked themselves back into the contest and in the 79th minute found parity through Tom Strickland.

The equaliser galvanised the Greens who pushed forward and in the 88th minute found a dramatic winner when Mitch Hore's cross found Yagoub Mustafa at the back post. Mustafa, who was making his return from injury slotted the ball past Nick Feely to send the Greens fans into raptures.

The Cup Final double header resumed on Sunday with the Nike F.C. Cup final, as South Melbourne FC and Calder United SC clashed in a rematch of last year's decider.

South Melbourne were strong out of the gates, peppering the Calder goal early but a 9th minute Alana Cerne strike shifted momentum and the defending champions doubled their advantage in the 22nd minute when captain Aleks Sinclair deflected a long range Cerne effort past Jenna Farrow to double the lead.

Any hopes of a South Melbourne comeback work dashed early in the second half, as Aleks Sinclair was brought down in the box and Melissa Taranto calmy slotted home to extend the lead to 3-0. And that's how things finished at Valley Park, the scoreline a carbon copy of last year and enough for Calder to claim an unprecedented fifth straight Nike F.C. Cup.
