Come 1958, the Victorian State League was formed, with twelve clubs competing over twenty-two rounds in a first-past-the-post model, a format which would hold firm for over two decades before the advent of the National Soccer League. The era witnessed the birth of lasting club legacies such as South Melbourne Hellas, Croatia (later Essendon Croatia and then Melbourne Knights), Fitzroy United (formerly Alexander and now Heidelberg United) and Green Gully. The final season of the State League in 1990 almost went to court before it took the pitch, with the VSF settling on an 18 club model over 34 gruelling matches, before long overdue reform would take place the following year.
