Cameron Irvine of Sale United FC named 2022 Male Volunteer of the Year

On behalf of the entire Victorian football community, Football Victoria (FV) congratulates Cameron Irvine on being awarded 2022 Male Volunteer of the Year at the 2022 FV Community Awards.

Described as the "first one at the Club and the last to leave", Cameron Irvine is the heartbeat of the Sale United Football Club.

Officially the Treasurer, Irvine was nominated for consistently going above and beyond for the Sale United community and for helping to grow the game in the region.

"Winning this award was a massive surprise, I didn't know I had been nominated! I do what I do for the love of the game and I want this Club to keep getting bigger and stronger. I believe we have one of the best facilities and my mentality is that if we make it as good as it can be, it will continue to attract people and grow the game," Irvine told FV.

Irvine joined the Club when his eldest son first laced up his boots in 2006. 16 years later, he has served as Treasurer for seven years and is involved in almost every aspect of the Club, from weekly tasks to administration. While his eldest and middle child have moved on, his youngest son still turns out for Sale, being a part of the senior men's squad.

"While my main role is Treasurer, I do field maintenance, the lines, work in the canteen and bar, mow the lawn and fix anything that needs fixing, I do just about anything that needs to be done!" Irvine said.

Darleen Richardson, who nominated Irvine for the award was glowing her praise, stating "He wants everyone to play the world game - male, female, youngsters and the older generation. He provides opportunities for people to get involved by organising all of the behind the scenes stuff that nobody else sees."

"Without Cameron’s commitment to working in excess of 30 volunteer hours per week ensuring the pitches and club rooms are in prime condition, we would not be able to provide all the extra football activities our club does. He also is a staunch supporter of Female Football Week and will put in the hard yards to ensure it is successful for all." she added.

Head of Diversity and Inclusion Nick Hatzoglou said Irvine was awarded the 2022 Male Volunteer of the Year because of his caring nature and track record of going above and beyond to ensure his club for over 15 years.

"Cameron is a real gem, he is someone you need at every club to ensure it runs smoothly," he said.

"He loves his club, but he also cares for the people he deals with and ensures the best for those in his circle."

"The community awards give us the chance to spotlight a handful of deserving volunteers, however, we would also like to acknowledge all the other hard-working volunteers of our football family who put in the hard yards every season."

Irvine was presented with the 2022 Male Volunteer Award at the Community In Business Full-Time Luncheon. The FV team congratulations Irvine on his hard work, dedication and selflessness. A worthy award winner and great role model for others in the community.
