Victoria's Kyra Cooney-Cross named the Matildas player of the match

Victoria’s Kyra Cooney-Cross was awarded the Player of the Match for Tuesday’s Commbank Matildas match against Thailand.

The Matildas defeated Thailand 2-0 in their last game of 2022 with Sam Kerr and Hayley Raso scoring on either side of half time
Cooney-Cross played had 60 touches and had two shots on target from her 90 minutes on the pitch.

The midfielder said she “really appreciated” the support from the fans after being presented with the award.

“Thank you to the fans for choosing me for player of the match tonight, I really enjoyed it,” she said.

“I had a great night.”

The former Melbourne Victory star said despite the comfortable win, there was definitely room for improvement.

“I think we could have got more goals, especially in the first half we would have liked to get more,” Cooney-Cross said.

“I think my first half could have been better, but throughout the game, I got more confident, especially in the second half.”

The Ballarat City junior enjoyed her time on the pitch back on home soil, playing maximum game time against Sweden and Thailand.

“It was good to end the year on a high, we always love playing at home, especially because this is the last game of 2022,” she said.

Since moving to Hammarby IF earlier this year from the Western Sydney Wanderers, Cooney-Cross has made 12 appearances and scored one goal.  

"I think moving to Sweden has definitely helped me (improve),” she said.

"Especially playing with (fellow Australians) KK (Elise Kellond-Knight and Ninnie (Courtney Nevin.”
