Dockerty Cup: Leading scorers to challenge for Alec Forrest Medal

Football Victoria can reveal that the leading goalscorer in the 2024 Dockerty Cup competition will be awarded the Alec Forrest Medal. An Australian and Victorian representative of the highest esteem and one of the state’s most prolific poachers, Forrest holds the unrivalled record of eight goals in Dockerty Cup finals.

Born in Scotland, Alec Forrest was a speedy forward who starred with Hakoah during the club’s golden age in the 1930s. He played a pivotal role in their three league championships and followed up with successful stints at South Yarra and Moreland, before concluding his playing career at Park Rangers, where he accumulated successive Cup trophies. Forrest represented his adopted country on 12 occasions, scoring 5 times, and was just as impressive for Victoria, where he scored 8 goals in 9 appearances.

Forrest first nabbed goals in a Dockerty Cup Final in 1934, scoring a brace for Hakoah in their 3-2 loss to Royal Caledonians in the Cup Final Replay. He helped Hakoah avenge that defeat with another brace the following year, as they edged out Caledonians 4-3 to claim their first trophy. Two more goals followed in the drawn final against Nobels in 1938, and he scored again in the replay the following week, as Hakoah were once again runners-up in a 3-2 loss. Remarkably, Forrest’s eighth and final goal in a Dockerty Cup Final came a decade later, where he assisted Park Rangers to a 4-3 win over South Yarra. Rangers are one of the descendant clubs that now form part of NPL club Moreland City, who make their debut in this year’s competition against Chelsea in the fourth round.

The early rounds of the 100th year of Dockerty Cup competition have already witnessed a glut of goals.
