Vale Ben Cassar

Football Victoria (FV) is saddened to hear of the passing of well-known Latrobe Valley football identity Ben Cassar.

Cassar, 41, was widely lauded as a gifted midfielder with tremendous skill who spent the majority of his life around the game as either a player or a coach.

Hailing from a famous footballing family in Gippsland, Cassar was one of the brightest young talents in the region, winning selection for several representative squads and ultimately making his way into the Victorian Institute of Sport.

He made his debut for the Gippsland Falcons in the National Soccer League whilst still a teenager - after enjoying great success with the club’s junior team - and went on to spend three years at the highest level.

After the Falcons’ exit from the national stage, Cassar remained in Gippsland and whilst he played with several local clubs, he became a mainstay at Morwell Pegasus - the club where his family name had become synonymous over many decades.

He continued to enjoy a long career at ‘Pegs’ as both a player and coach and was well-liked by the entire football fraternity in the Latrobe Valley.

The FV Board of Directors, Executive and staff send their sincere condolences to the Cassar family.
