FV congratulates Engin Aksac on 30 years of service as a referee

Over the coming months, FV will be highlighting good news stories from within our refereeing community. We are immensely proud of their achievements and appreciate the ongoing service they provide to our game.

The Football Victoria team would like to send a heartfelt congratulations to Engin Arif Aksac, who has been awarded a gold medal for 30 years of service as a referee in our state.

Shortly after emigrating from Turkey in 1980, Aksac began refereeing at his nephew’s matches as a way to keep physically active and become involved in Australia’s football community.

This quickly turned into a passion which would lead to an illustrious career that has spanned three decades.

“The recognition of my service means so much to me,” Aksac said.

“My love of football goes back to my childhood and officiating the game is the best way I feel that I can remain involved in the world game.”

A highly respected school teacher between 1983 to 2003, Aksac is known for his engaging style of communication and dedication to creating a safe and enjoyable atmosphere.

Now a senior member of Victoria’s refereeing fraternity, he has become a role model for young officials and uses his considerable experience to mentor the next generation of referees coming through the ranks.

“Patience and persistence are keys to becoming a referee, as not everyone will always agree with your decisions! Study the rules constantly, so you feel confident in your decisions,” Aksac said.

“Evaluating yourself after each game is important so that you ensure to learn from your mistakes. Also, staying physically fit helps to keep your mind clear, calm and collected so that you aren’t as affected by fatigue.”

Among his many career achievements, Aksac says his maiden international game stands out as a particular personal highlight.

“My favourite game that I’ve refereed was the 2002 World Master Games Women’s Grand Finale between Australia and Canada. The game was played at Olympic Stadium, it was my first international game as a referee,” he said.

“I was given a medal on the day which serves as great reminder of that game.”
