All Abilities football shines at annual Gala Day

One of the most exciting events in the football calendar, Football Victoria's annual All Abilities Gala Day was held over the weekend, providing a thrilling conclusion to the All Abilities April initiative.

Held at the Darebin International Sports Centre (DISC), more than 120 participants took part on the day, with roughly 70 parents, guardians and carers joining on the sidelines to cheer the players on.

Players of all backgrounds, skill levels and abilities took part in 5-a-side (juniors) and 7-a-side (seniors) games with a mix of experienced veterans and new starters coming out for the event.

Selin Arpaci, Diversity & Inclusion Coordinator was delighted with the turnout on the day, stating the importance of promoting pathways for All Abilities athletes.

"It was so rewarding to see the players so eager to pull on their boots and play after disruptions over the last few years. Seeing players try our game for the first time and the smiles on their faces was a particular highlight. It was also nice to see the friendly environment which took place on the day, with players filling in for other teams when they were short, and getting along" she said.

"Players were more keen than ever to be back on the field after the event was held off for the past two years due to COVID. I would highly encourage everyone who would like to give football a go in a safe and inclusive environment, whether you are looking to play casually or competitively."

"Most importantly, the league can offer a pathway for people with a disability to play in the league and to integrate into mainstream sports. It is never too later to join."
